Big Hopper

Big Hopper

In Situ Sculpture
Material: plywood, screws, wood glue, metal
Size:  9,5 x 5 x 4m

Big Hopper is an in-situ sculpture in the form of a grasshopper that looks as if it’s ready to take a leap. The installation is a celebration of nature’s architecture and solemnity. When we came there, we concluded that the form, a figure of a grasshopper sitting by the lakeshore was a good choice for a sculpture that people in Aaka could live with.

The site-specific piece does not need to work everywhere, but rather capture the special feature of the site. People passing, are challenged with the opportunity to stop and peek into the sculpture and they can go inside. The “room” allows one to become part of the scenery; it offers a space to sit and take a rest, a place ready for another way of intertwining with nature that just a sculpture that just stand there does. The concept of people being invited to be actively involved has constantly been growing as an interest of ours.
