On the Way is a performative work that ends in the gallery as the installation Way 2 be, showcasing the playful process of “the making” on LCD screens integrated in the sculptural piece.

The idea was to create an artwork that emerges from the feeling of being stuck – to take situations “by the ear” and move forward. Or, as Johannes Itten once said: it’s 99 percent transpiration – if you’re lucky, inspiration will come through the doing.

We had been using cardboard as a material for some time  – light, easy to build with, and still not typical in the art world, but it surely will be. For us it’s important to be playful, to see beyond the trees, and to let the outside “come in” from time to time. But how does this process actually become a work of art?

One day, unexpectedly, a giant green grasshopper entered our studio. After its short visit, we were mesmerized. When stuck, it can walk, jump, fly, or hum its way forward. We took these steps internally to follow  – how to stay on track. As artists, you get more “no” than “yes”- it’s part of the job. So, change the angle, the space, or the story, keep moving. Walk, jump, fly, or communicate your way out of the stickiness.

In the studio that day, we began revolving materials at hand. We balanced stuff on our heads, played loud music, and moved with the groove. Through that silliness, something shifted-suddenly, a concept for the upcoming show was born. To walk the work from the studio through the city into the gallery, and create a temporary sculpture exposing the process of the making.
